Cemetery Walk

Sunday, October 23, 2022

The Dade County Historical Society Presents: Sarah's Chapel Cemetery Walk Sunday, October 23, 2022

It is finally time for the event we have been working toward for months now – the Sarah’s Chapel Cemetery Walk on Sunday, October 23rd!

Members of the Dade County Historical Society have been busy behind the scenes getting everything in place. The mission of the Historical Society is to recognize and protect local history in the form of architecture, family histories and photographs, and area history. Our Cemetery Walk will combine all these goals as we lead visitors through Sarah’s Chapel Cemetery to hear from re-enactors sharing the histories of some of the families buried there. Here's a sneak peek at the re-enactor line-up: Joab McCollum, The Morgan Family, Thenie Brogdon, Lorenda Guinn Killian, and Mary Ann McDonough Bennett.

The Sarah’s Chapel Cemetery Walk will take place on Sunday, October 23, 2022. There is no public parking at the cemetery, so the Historical Society will be providing shuttles from North Dade Recreational & Development (old North Dade School) to the cemetery and back. The address is 18277 U.S. Highway 11, Trenton, GA 30752. Bus service begins at 2:00 pm Eastern and the presentations begin at 3:00 pm Eastern.

New tour groups will be starting throughout the afternoon. It will take approximately one hour to hear all the re-enactors’ presentations. Buses will run continuously until the event ends.

What does one wear to a cemetery walk? Keep in mind that this is a country cemetery. The terrain is grassy and uneven. There are critters, such as ants and spiders, throughout the area. Flip-flops or high heels are not appropriate. You should wear closed-toed shoes for your safety. Dress comfortably and be prepared for an easy walk.

There is no charge to attend the Sarah’s Chapel Cemetery Walk or to ride the shuttles to the event. However, there are three reasons you may want to bring some money along. Firstly, the Historical Society has compiled a 25-page booklet of research information about some of the families in Sarah’s Chapel. A limited number of copies will be available for $10 each.

Secondly, you may want to go ahead and join the Dade County Historical Society while you’re there. Dues are $10 per year per person.

The third reason to bring money is to donate to the Historical Society. Donations help fund cemetery clean-up, tombstone repairs, and the shuttle buses that make events like this possible. Whether you are interested in buying, joining, or donating, we can accept cash or checks made out to Dade County Historical Society.

The final, most important thing to remember is to pre-register! This will allow us to know how many visitors to plan for. This will also allow organizers to notify you in case of rain rescheduling (the rain date is October 30th) or any other last-minute updates. To pre-register, simply send your name, number of attendees in your party, your email address, and your phone number to dchsgaforever@gmail.com. Questions can be directed to Gail Hedden at 423-987-3713. We look forward to seeing you on October 23rd
